KOCHI: The Tata Group’s new resort in Wayanad, opened late last month, which has caught the eye of travelers for its breathtaking location on the edge of a hill with stunning forest and lake views surroundings, was built and developed by a local businessman.

Banasura Sagar Hotels and Resorts India Pvt Ltd, owned by Mr Mohan Krishnan, who built the property over a period of seven years by investing around Rs 100 crore, has leased the property to Tata Group’s Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) for a period of 20 years. “This is our first step into the hotel business. The property will be managed on a profit sharing basis, and there will also be management fees,” Krishnan, who is the CMD of Banasurasagar Hotels and Resorts, told TNIE over the phone.

The 10-acre resort comprises 61 rooms and villas and boasts 270-degree views of the hills and Banasura Lake, where guests can experience the tranquil beauty of the destination. The Presidential Villa, which comes with three beds, an Ayurvedic spa and an exclusive swimming pool, is the most expensive room in the property, priced at Rs 1 lakh/night, while the cheapest room will cost Rs 18,000/night.

Krishnan had owned the land for around 15 years before starting construction of the complex for the Taj Group. He said the property had all the required approvals and was built following all environmental rules and guidelines. Earlier in a statement, Puneet Chhatwal, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of IHCL said, “While Kerala is known for its scenic beauty and natural resources, Wayanad is a lesser discovered gem. With the opening of Taj Wayanad Resort & Spa, we are thrilled to bring to life another aspect of the magic that defines God’s Own Country. We believe this luxury lakeside hotel will put Wayanad on the world tourism map, while strengthening IHCL’s presence in Kerala.

He said a big advantage for Taj Wayanad is that it is located within driving distance from Kozhikode, Kannur and Bengaluru. “The Taj Wayanad Resort and Spa is the perfect getaway for those looking to rediscover the beauty of Kerala in all its glory. Here, nature is one with luxury, and guests can enjoy immersive experiences such as nature interpretive and bicycle tours, and local village tours. We look forward to welcoming guests to this little piece of paradise in Kerala soon,” said Saji Thackery, General Manager of Taj Wayanad Resort.
