San Diego resort gets top spot in US News luxury ranking
Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa was named the #1 resort in California and one of the top three in the country in the latest US News & World Report rankings.
The Rancho Valencia was also named California’s Best Hotel and ranked fourth best hotel on the national list.
This year, the top three California resorts are all locally based. Among the top resorts in California were the Fairmont Grand Del Mar in Carmel Valley (#2), the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort in Carlsbad (#3), and The Lodge at Torrey Pines in La Jolla (#9).
On the list of Best Hotels in California, the Fairmont Grand Del Mar ranked #4 (and #21 nationally), the Park Hyatt took fifth place (and #23 nationally), and The Lodge at Torrey Pines came in at No. 17.
Top spots in the United States went to The Peninsula Chicago (#1 hotel), Montage Kapalua Bay in Hawaii (#1 hotel, #2 hotel) and Acqualina Resort & Residences on the Beach in Florida (#2 hotel). 2, hotel no. 3).
Nationally, Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa ranked third on the resort list. The resort town of Rancho Santa Fe jumped from its previous year’s ranking to No. 2 on the list of California resort towns.

Earlier this month, US News & World Report released its Best Hotels and Best Resorts lists, which rank properties that consistently receive a “hotel class” rating of 4, 4.5, or 5. stars. US News considers the opinions of published travel experts and overall customer satisfaction expressed online in its analysis.
The best hotels are ranked by US News using a combination of awards and recognition, hotel class ratings, and guest reviews. The best resorts are evaluated using the hotel’s overall score, determined by its class, guest rating, awards and recognition points.

Although travel isn’t where it was before COVID, the tourism industry is slowly but surely bouncing back. In San Diego County, hotel occupancy averaged 61.4% last year, down from 76.6% in 2019 before the COVID-19 closures, according to the San Diego Tourism Authority.
