BANGKOK, THAILAND – S PCL Hotels and Resortsthe global hotel company of Singha Estate PCLsigned an agreement with the Maldivian government Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure develop a new public recreation area for residents of Male, while continuing to give back to the communities in which it operates, in line with its deep commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The new picnic park will be located at CROSSROADS Maldives, the first multi-island leisure destination in the Indian Ocean. Nestled in Embhoodoo Lagoon, just 15 minutes from the crowded capital of the Maldives, this welcoming beachfront will feature three hectares of open space and fantastic facilities that can accommodate up to 500 people, including 200 meters of public beach, a mosque, large gardens, several barbecue areas and beach cabins. Visitors can also relax and take part in a range of beach games, such as soccer and volleyball. Scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2022, the park will be accessible to everyone, including young and old, families, visitors and people with reduced mobility.
Easily accessible from Male by ferry, this impressive park will allow local residents to enjoy family days and interact in a social and lively setting. They can also combine their day of relaxation with a stroll around The Marina CROSSROADS, an 800-meter lifestyle zone and beach promenade that offers a wealth of world-class facilities, including various dining options, retail stores, wellness centers, water sports, diving, kids’ clubs and a 30-berth marina.
At CROSSROADS Maldives, visitors can learn all about the heritage of the archipelago, above and below the waves. the Maldives Discovery Center, which is located near Picnic Park, allows all ages to experience the country’s rich culture through interactive exhibits and see how local arts and crafts have shaped its unique identity. The Marine Discovery Center, on the other hand, is dedicated to protecting the precious underwater ecosystems of the Maldives through important initiatives such as coral propagation and reproduction. After the picnic park is completed, the center’s marine biologist will host regular lectures on key issues such as climate change and zero waste to educate society on the importance of conservation.
The Picnic Park reflects S Hotels & Resorts’ deep commitment to improving the lives of people in the destinations where it operates. Malé is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, and its limited space means there are few public places where residents can relax. The picnic park will alleviate this problem and create an important new social hub for families and friends to relax together and mingle with tourists.
It is a great example of S Hotels & Resorts commitment to integrating the UN SDGs into all aspects of its operations, including SDG11,”Sustainable cities and communities” and SDG14, “life under water”. By integrating social projects into its developments, the company believes it can spread the benefits of tourism even more widely. Previous initiatives have included the donation of medical supplies and electric vehicles to support the fight against the global pandemic in the Maldives, support for waste management in southern Thailand by collecting more than 8,000 kg of marine debris in Koh Phi Phi in 2021 and the support of over 30 local families who provide longtail boat services to SAii Phi Phi Island Village.
“We are delighted to begin work on Picnic Park, which will become an important recreation center for the people of Male. Too often, local people do not feel the benefits of tourism. This problem is particularly common in island resort areas, where visitors are often separated from their hosts. At S Hotels & Resorts, we want to do things a little differently. CROSSROADS Maldives is a fully integrated lifestyle destination where guests can enjoy world-class tourism experiences while connecting with the Maldivian people and learning about their culture. By integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into our operations, we strive to make a real difference in people’s lives and have a long-term positive impact wherever we do business.,” noted Dirk de CuyperCEO, S Hotels & Resorts.
