MASSANUTTEN, Va., March 9, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Just Turned 50and anniversary and previously announcing significant energy efficiency improvements in new snowmaking facilities, Massanutten Resort is now adding solar panels to its sustainability efforts. The bays are believed to be the first to serve a major ski and summer resort in Virginia.

The first two installations will be bays on the roof of the resort’s Woodstone check-in building and its housekeeping department’s laundry room. Between them, the two bays are expected to produce more than 354,000 kilowatt hours (kwh) of electricity per year. An average single-family home consumes 14,000 kWh of electricity per year.

Waiting for approval by Rockingham County, a third installation will soon come into service: a ground network adjoining the WaterPark. This network should produce more than 1.9 million kWh per year.

“Sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint will be among our main goals in the years to come,” said Steve Crohn, COO of The Resorts Companies, owner of Massanutten. “We are making significant improvements to our ski lift run and snowmaking infrastructure, and doing so in the most energy efficient way possible. Investing in solar power generation supports these goals.”

Design and engineering work is handled by Secure Futures LLC of Staunton, Virginia.

“Helping Massanutten include solar power generation in its sustainability vision is an honor,” said Ryan McAllister, CEO of Secure Futures. “It will help the station save costs, and we also hope the projects will be an educational resource for Rockingham County. We are co-investors in this project and we have created an innovative financial model that reduces risks for owners while maximizing tax advantages.”

Krohn said at least two bays are expected to be online by mid-autumn and this is only the first phase of carbon reduction development at the station. “It will be a multi-year process,” he said. “We are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and expect further sustainability announcements in the near future.”
