When I first visited the Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina, it ticked all my boxes for a wedding room: a country club atmosphere in a quaint town, a beautiful ballroom, a golf course for my husband and his groomsmen, and an option for an outdoor ceremony. However, I needed a place to get ready on the wedding day, and we didn’t want to shell out $1,500 per night for a hotel suite that only accommodated two people. So I started browsing Airbnb and found Pinehurst Old Church. From the listing, I fell in love with the modern yet classic vibe of the house and was already imagining my photos in its high vaulted ceilings. We booked the Airbnb even before signing the marriage contract with the station.

A few weeks after booking, I received a message from the hosts with contact details for a personalized concierge, Wally, who was able to help with golf tee times, fill the fridge, make restaurant reservations, etc. Because we wanted to host a bridesmaids luncheon the day before the wedding, Wally helped recommend local caterers and linen rental companies, and even offered us a home visit prior to our stay.

When my mom, aunt and I first walked through the doors, we realized the pictures didn’t do it justice. With four proper bedrooms and a loft upstairs, we knew there would be plenty of space for my family to sleep in before the wedding. We were impressed by the architecture of the old church, which functioned as an Irish Catholic place of worship in the community before being turned into a private residence. It features hardwoods and stained glass mixed with more modern design accents like gold chandeliers, exposed brickwork, a pool table, leather sofas, and a projector screen. The open living space includes a chef’s kitchen, massive dining table, bar area and plenty of seating. Outside, the house has a basketball hoop, fire pit and dining area.

During our three night stay, Old Church wore many hats. It served as a place where eight of us slept through the weekend, a meeting place for out-of-town guests to eat pizza and watch Thursday night football, the place from my bridesmaid lunch, the base camp for me and my daughters before heading to the ceremony and the shelter where my family returned home after the reception. Wally the concierge was also instrumental in our weekend. He stopped by (never out of the blue!) to make sure we had everything we needed and helped us get a group of 40 people into Pinehurst Brewing Company during peak hours.

Of course we had a very specific reason for renting the property, and while they are open to hosting small events, it would also be the perfect location for a golf outing, spa weekend or meeting. family in the charming town of pinehurst, North Carolina. And while its beauty was obvious, it was also a comfortable and pleasant place to sleep. The beds were comfortable and the rooms were dark and spacious.

However, one thing to note: while the Sandhills area is home to over 40 golf courses, if you’re hoping to play the iconic Pinehurst No. 2, which is the site of the 2024 US Open, or No. 4 , you must stay at the Pinehurst Resort. Tee times for other resort courses for non-hotel guests are subject to availability.

A few months ago, the first large banyan tree on the east side of Hilo’s iconic Banyan Drive transformed from a majestic tree into a collapsed mess.

“I was working every day, then one day I noticed it,” said Miki Malama, an employee of the nearby Naniloa golf course. “And we want to know what happened.”

Luana Richardson, president of Friends of Banyan Drive, said Hawaii County officials told her the tree had collapsed on itself, but how and why remained a mystery. She speculates it could be related to pruning done by county workers, or perhaps invasive wasps killing decades-old banyan trees.

The collapsed tree is on state land, which is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Lands and Natural Resources, but is leased to the county’s Department of Public Works and the Naniloa Resort Hotel. A DLNR representative said most of the trees were within county road boundaries, while others were within the three leased properties and it was the tenant’s responsibility to maintain them.

Several attempts have been made with the DLNR and the county Department of Public Works to seek clarification as to how the tree collapsed, but no explanation has been received.

But whatever the reason for the collapse, Richardson said it highlights the need for a plan on how to save the trees for future generations. It’s tricky because the trees are in an area that involves a complex group of companies, with responsibility for upkeep split between state, local and private entities.

“I feel like there are a lot of alternatives we can do to save them,” Richardson said. “What would Banyan Drive be without the trees?

Banyan Drive sits on an archipelago that meanders along the coast. The road is an attraction due to its beautiful trees whose collective canopy provides a shaded tunnel that weaves through luxury hotels and a golf course – and the stories and history behind the trees.

They were planted primarily in the 1930s through the 1950s to commemorate American movie stars, Hawaiian royalty, explorers, politicians, and “other fascinating people who lived at a time when the world was on the brink of a monumental change,” according to Jane’s blurb. Hoff’s book “The Trees of Banyan Drive”.

THE ARTICLE CONTINUES UNDER THE AD

The tradition of planting non-native trees on the road started in 1933 by screen star Cecil B. DeMille, who was in Hawaii to shoot a Hollywood movie. A week later, Babe Ruth arrived in Hilo for an exhibition game and planted another banyan tree.

The following year, President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited the island and he “planted” a tree, which was not easy to install because it was partially crippled and it was a dirt road with vegetation invasive. Roosevelt only touched the tree and threw dirt on its base from inside his car.

It has become a tradition, with around 50 banyan trees eventually planted. They included one by Amelia Earhart in 1935, five days before she set a world record flight from Honolulu to Oakland, the first solo flight across the Pacific Ocean.

Other trees were planted with wooden signs with the names of Louis Armstrong, Babe Ruth, Richard Nixon, King George V, Queen Elizabeth and volcanologist Dr Thomas Jagger. Some have planted their trees. Some did not do it, others did it in their honor.

THE ARTICLE CONTINUES UNDER THE AD

Most of the trees survived three tsunamis that devastated Hilo, but many of their wooden panels are rotten, faded or missing.

Sherise Kana’e-Kāne, spokeswoman for the Department of Public Works, said the county was in the process of bidding for the tree trimming contract. But no action is planned to combat the invasive gall wasp, which infects historic banyan trees.

The wasps, which also infect other trees locally and across the state, burrow into tree branches to lay eggs and leaves behind larvae that prevent the trees from growing new leaves. These issues, along with overgrowth, pose a challenge to a road famous for its history, a shaded walking and jogging route, and a popular route for residents and visitors.

Winston Welch, executive director of Outdoor Circle, a grassroots organization focused on environmental conservation, said: “I think what we need to do is understand: ‘How do we go from forward to take care of these extremely iconic trees?’

The decaying hotel at Miami Beach’s historic Deauville Beach Resort, which once hosted everyone from the Beatles to President John F. Kennedy, is set to implode after being declared an unsafe structure.

The implosion of the Deauville hotel tower at 6701 Collins Avenue will take place at 8 a.m. on Sunday

Streets in the area – Collins Avenue and Harding Avenue from 65th to 70th Street – will be closed around 7:30 a.m. and are expected to reopen at 10:00 a.m.

Aerial video shows the Deauville hotel gutted and prepared for Sunday’s implosion in Miami Beach.

The historic building has been closed since 2017 after being damaged by an electrical fire and Hurricane Irma. It fell into such poor condition that an engineering report found it “unsafe” and beyond repair, saying it “cannot be saved due to structural defects”.

Historic Conservators led a years-long effort to save the building, but after reviewing a structural report from an engineering firm hired by the owners, the Miami Beach Building Department declared a demolition order.

The building was originally constructed in 1957 and in the 1960s Deauville was the place to be. The “Ed Sullivan Show” broadcast a Beatles appearance live from the hotel ballroom in 1964, and President John F. Kennedy gave a speech to young Democrats there in 1961. Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Judy Garland and Tony Bennett have also performed at the station.

Miami Dolphins owner Stephen Ross had proposed a two-tower development designed by architect Frank Gehry, including a six-star hotel and luxury residences, on the Deauville site.

But on Election Day, Miami Beach voters said “no” to allowing Ross to exceed current building size regulations to construct the development.

The future of the Deauville hotel site is once again uncertain, but Miami Beach voters have said “yes” to improving arts and cultural institutions. Reporting by Laura Rodriguez of NBC 6.

However, the future of the site remains uncertain following the implosion.

“The challenge with Deauville property is that the previous owners of it have created such a high price tag that it’s very difficult for a development to operate there,” said Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber. “So someone has to build something that will make enough money to justify a purchase price.”

Gelber had been a supporter of Ross’ plan, but said he was not abandoning the site.

“It’s just going back to the drawing board. I think it will be terrible if in 10 or 20 years this ground is still empty,” Gelber said.

Joining sister properties in Dubai, Montenegro, Greece and Thailand, the luxury hotel will offer 115 rooms, 25 spacious suites and 30 beautifully designed high-end villas, each with its own private pool.

The brand is also bringing its famous beach club concept – which debuted in Miami in 1998 – to the Sultanate. Nikki Beach Muscat will be located adjacent to the hotel and promises a stylish musical ambience, a swim-up bar and a shimmering private shoreline.

Located approximately four kilometers off the Palm Jumeirah, Islands of the Anantara world Dubai Resort was the first hotel to open on the emirate’s ambitious offshore project.

The luxury retreat, located on the South American mainland of the World’s Island Development, is unlike anything already in the United Arab Emirates.

The National has been invited for a stay to see what awaits him on the island.

Home

Arriving at Anantara World Islands is quite a special experience. Guests check in at the hotel’s sister resort, Anantara Dubai, The Palm, and are shown to a dedicated waiting area before a boat transfer to the islands of the world.

Boats run hourly and guests are driven by golf cart to the hotel’s private dock to board their awaiting vessel.

The journey takes about 20 minutes, and although the sea was a little choppy on the day we visited, we still enjoyed the novelty of it all, admiring the surrounding Dubai skyline as we went.

By the time we arrive at the station we already feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city, helped by the crew standing on the platform waiting to welcome us with song, instruments and flower necklaces, giving us the sense that we have walked on a tropical island.

While waiting for our bags to be unloaded and our room keys offered to us, we were offered fresh coconut water, which we enjoyed while admiring the view of downtown Dubai directly across the river. ‘water.

The neighborhood

As the first resort to open in the islands of the world, naturally there isn’t much else around. However, that is the charm of this resort. From the minute we arrive we feel like we’ve escaped the city quite well, and if it weren’t for the reflection of the Burj Khalifa in the distance we think we could be in the Maldives – not bad for a 20- minute boat ride.

There are uninterrupted views in all directions and the water surrounding the island is as blue as we saw it in Dubai.

Bedroom

Our One Bedroom Pool and Garden Villa is incredibly spacious. The villas’ triangular design means each has very high ceilings, providing an airy and open feel.

There is a lounge area, with two sofas, which overlooks the pool and the beach beyond.

The huge king-size bed is one of the most comfortable I’ve slept in, helped even more by the huge pillow menu on the bedside table, giving guests the option to customize to their liking.

The bathroom is also extremely spacious, with a double sink, a free-standing bathtub, a huge walk-in shower and a separate toilet.

Decor adds to the resort’s island vibe, with rattan accents, wood-beamed ceilings, and crisp white linens.

There are also plenty of little touches to add extra convenience, like Coffee Planet pods and Pure Herbs toiletries.

Perhaps the most impressive part of the room is the pool deck. The private pool is the perfect size for two people and overlooks part of the hotel’s private beach across the path. There are two plush loungers by the pool, perfect for lounging on an afternoon.

The service

The service is excellent from start to finish. The staff who took us to our room by buggy gave us a quick tour of the resort pointing out all the facilities we need to know about during our stay.

The resort also offers pick-up services to take guests to restaurants and spa appointments, or if you prefer to walk, you can stroll at your own pace.

All of the servers we encounter are incredibly friendly and eager to show off the resort’s offerings, as well as recommend dishes on the menus, which is always welcome.

The scene

The atmosphere of the island is immediate as soon as you get off the boat. The entire resort has a relaxed, bohemian feel, with a tranquility surrounding everything from the public spaces to the rooms. There’s a palm-lined main pool, with bonsai trees that add Anantara’s signature Thai touches. The resort’s private beach allows for long walks along the shore, and the wooden swings only add to the feeling of getting away from it all, and also provide that perfect Instagram moment if you’re so inclined.

There are tennis courts, for those who fancy a match during their stay, as well as a spa if you prefer to sit back and relax, with a range of signature Anantara massages and Thai treatments.

The resident wandering peacocks often roam the rooms and along the beach, so don’t be surprised if they come by to say hello during your stay.

The food

There are three main restaurants on the island. Next to the pool is Helios, Anantara World Islands Dubai Resort’s all-day Mediterranean restaurant. There’s also Luna, a Frida Kahlo-inspired South American lounge located above Helios. Serving tapas and a wide range of drinks, the elevated position of this colorful restaurant guarantees stunning ocean views towards the Dubai skyline.

We dine at Qamar, the resort’s Middle Eastern and Indian restaurant, elegant and romantic without being ostentatious. Its terrace, which overlooks the water, is a peaceful and intimate place, perfect for admiring the sunset.

We skip the starters and head straight for the main courses, because there are a few dishes we want to try. First up is the paneer tikka butter masala (Dh120), which is the perfect blend of creamy and tart. We also order the butter chicken (Dh150) which had a creamy tomato and cashew sauce. It’s wholesome and warming and hits the spot perfectly.

On the recommendation of our waiter, we try the sultan murgh angara (Dh205) – pieces of chicken thighs marinated in the chef’s special masala, slowly cooked in the tandoor and served in an iron pot. Although we couldn’t finish the dish due to its size, the meat is succulent and juicy and perfectly seasoned.

For breakfast, we head to Helios, where we order a la carte and feast on the caramelized French toast, topped with berry compote, creme fraiche and caramel sauce, which is sticky, sweet and perfect for weekend breakfast.

Highs and lows

The only downside was that our room, unlike some others, didn’t have a door to walk through for some privacy in the pool. The villa backed onto the public beach path and although it was fairly quiet during our stay, spotting the odd passerby left us a bit exposed.

A highlight was a bath in the bedroom’s giant tub, which was almost big enough to swim in.

The insider tip

Be sure to plan boat times in advance to ensure you maximize your time at the resort.

The verdict

Anantara World Islands Resort Dubai takes vacation at home to a whole new level. Photo: Anantara

A weekend at Anantara World Islands truly takes the meaning of a home vacation to a new level. The hotel exudes escapism from the second you board the boat, and even though the Dubai skyline looms on the horizon, you’ll feel a million miles from home.

The bottom line

Room rates start from Dh1,596 for a room with pool on the beach including breakfast. Check-in is from 3:00 p.m. and check-out is at 12:00 p.m. www.anantara.com

The Disneyland Resort is an iconic vacation spot. While the resort has nowhere near the geographic sprawl of its Orlando counterpart, Walt Disney World, what it lacks in scale, it makes up for in every other category.

Anaheim’s smaller station footprint means there’s a noticeable lack of Disney Owned Hotels surrounding the two parks. In fact, Disneyland Resort has only three Disney-operated hotels (compared to more than 30 accommodations under the company’s banner in Walt Disney World). That means many people who venture into the happiest place on earth end up staying outside of Mickey Mouse’s house in what Disney calls Good Neighbor Hotelsmany of which are within walking distance of the parks gates.

According to Disney, Good Neighbor Hotels “provide quality accommodations located near the Disneyland Resort.” There are more than 50 in the region, with rates adapted to most budgets. Of all the Disneyland hotels not managed by the company, our top pick is located directly across from the resort on Harbor Boulevard and offers guests all the amenities they’ll need for a great vacation.

The entrance to the Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel and Water Playground is on South Harbor Boulevard, less than 10 minutes’ walk from the Disneyland Resort.

Traver F. via Yelp

Why Howard Johnson Anaheim is our top pick

The Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel and Water Playground is in an ideal location, directly across from the Harbor Boulevard entrance to the Disneyland Resort which leads to the Esplanade, the central hub between the two parks and the Downtown Disney District. In addition to its prime location, the Howard Johnson Anaheim offers fantastic amenities, themed rooms, and an impressive on-site water park. Guests with a keen eye will also spot the bright red Disneyland monorail that regularly passes the hotel, adding to the immersion.

The hotel can be identified along the main thoroughfare near Disneyland by its mid-century modern look and circular lobby featuring arched windows and a unique geometric design. Each of the six buildings in which the rooms are located have recently undergone significant refreshes in the hallways and rooms, allowing for a better overall experience for guests.

You'll find rooms perfect for families, couples, or solo travelers at the Howard Johnson Anaheim hotel, including those with bunk beds for the kids to sleep in after days at Disneyland.

No matter who you’re traveling with — if anyone — there’s a room type at the Howard Johnson Anaheim for everyone. Rooms range in size from standard two-double rooms to large suites that sleep up to five on traditional beds and a set of bunk beds that little ones will love.

What makes each of the rooms ideal for Disney fans are all the thoughtful decor touches. In each of the standard double rooms there is a concept art print by legendary Disney artist, Mary Blair, which is said to have been Walt Disney’s Favorite Artist. Deluxe and Premium rooms feature Mickey Mouse artwork and Disneyland attractions in a more modern, brightly colored form.

The suites are themed after the classic Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, with dark garnet colors, dark wood furnishings, and plenty of pirate-inspired artwork. Some of the art is actually concept art prints for the attraction drawn by Marc Davis, one of The Walt Disney Company’s original Imagineers. The on-site water park goes hand-in-hand with the pirate theme that runs through some suites. Castaway Creek. Kids love this large water playground, especially on Anaheim summer days. Castaway Cove offers slides, water cannons, soaking buckets and a jungle gym where kids and adults can have fun together. For those wanting a more subdued pool experience, the hotel’s garden pool doesn’t require a reservation and is open most of the day. Lounge chairs and tables are set up around the pool, so parents can relax poolside and keep an eye on their kids after a day at the parks.

Proximity to Disneyland is unmatched among Good Neighbor hotels

Being able to get up, get dressed, and cross the street to enjoy a day at Disneyland Resort is a big reason why the Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel and Water Playground is our top pick among Good Neighbor Hotels. The proximity of this one to Disneyland is truly unmatched.

Due to the close proximity to accommodations, visitors staying at the Howard Johnson Anaheim need not worry about walking which can be a mile or more down Harbor Boulevard from other Good Neighbor hotels. This means you can spend more time in bed in the morning before the park opens and relax on your beleaguered feet at the end of the day.

The nightly fireworks display at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California is one of the highlights of a visit. Depending on the nearby hotel you are staying at, you may even see them without being at the park.

Another perk of being so close to Disneyland is seeing the park’s legendary fireworks from the comfort of your private balcony—if it’s facing the right way, of course. Kids love being able to watch the sky light up in their pajamas, and adults love not being in the long lines of crowds trying to get out of the park when the display is over.

Though they all carry the Disneyland Resort stamp of approval, a stay at the Howard Johnson Anaheim Hotel stands above other nearby Good Neighbor hotels. The level of service, amenities, carefully themed rooms, and proximity to Disneyland make this our go-to spot for a few nights in Anaheim, especially when you don’t want to shell out the extra money to sleep in one of the few official Disneyland hotels. .
